Reciprocal links are dead
Link creation has long been held as a necessary part of website promotion. If you do not get high quality links from reputable websites back to your own then your website will forever be stuck deep in the depths of Googles murky interior. The problem with linking though is that it is a time consuming practice that still requires a certain amount of skill in order to do it correctly.

The reason for this is simple, as time passes Google and the other major search engines are devaluing reciprocal links. It used to be easy to find a website with a related theme or topic, find whether it had any link pages and then email them, saying that you had added their link to your site and would they mind awfully adding your link to a suitable page on their site. Most link savvy webmasters would gladly oblige, but of late this strategy is proving less useful. Google is aware that many webmasters are simply using reciprocal linking to aid ranking, when the point of Googles algorithm counting backlinks was as a popularity contest. For this reason Google is steadily turning its attention to non-reciprocal links, working on the theory that they will have more merit than a simple link exchange.
The immediate answer to this is to carry out what is called three way linking instead of reciprocal linking. This is simply put a situation where three sites link in a triangle, a to b, b to c, and c to a. By doing this all three sites give a link (which does them no harm) and in turn receives a one way link. The down side to this is that unlike reciprocal linking, it soon becomes very complicated to workout if your link partners are still linking to where they should. With reciprocal linking you can run software that will look at all of the links that you have on a page on your site, and then visit each site in turn and look for a link back to your site. With three way linking such a system has not been created.
